Ideas to improve Children's eating habits

Every child is different and their eating habits are also different. General problem which mothers face during parenting is about feeding kids. Especially during the age of 2-3, it is a huge task to run behind them and make them eat .Being somewhat "Experienced" in this area now, thought will share few suggestions and ideas regarding food which kids will like.

The first thing which normally happens in any house is the mother wants to feed healthy food and children like to eat only junk food.80% of healthy food and 20% of Junk food is what I felt would work out. So, started working towards at-least 80% of providing healthy food (Dhivya's 80-20 principle:)) ).Fathers somehow end up supporting kids for their happiness and infact we have argued many times for this as well. Then, at times, we have ended up in mixing these 2 and that's how this 80-20 principle :)

Few ideas where I have used this 80-20 principle:

1) Kids always want bread with Peanut butter/mayo/Nutella. As I didn't like the idea of giving bread daily, thought further and came up with this idea of Dosa with spread. Made small uthappams and applied a bit of spread on it , rolled and gave to children. They really liked it. Then had an agreement with them that if they eat one day this Dosa roll, then one day they should have Dosa with Veggies/tricolour dosa. Made small uthappams and sprinkled grated beetroots/carrots, onions and coriander leaves on top which attracted them very much and they quite liked the idea of eating this with tomato sauce. This is a good lunch box idea and still Pranhav takes this once in a week in his tiffin box for breakfast.

2) Feeding rice with Veggies was very difficult in the age of 2-4 and even now sometimes. After making a sambaar & Veggie, they tried to ignore the vegetables totally and were eating rice with potato chips. The idea of making mixed rice with one Veg / veggies was really better . It saves more of cooking effort also and Children couldn't avoid the vegetables much . So, started making one of the following rice items atleast 3 days in a week.
  • Bisebele Bath - With Dhaal and more vegetables, less spicy and with a Raitha as side dish , it is a complete meal. Since it is very smooth and tasty , kids eat it easily with a few pieces of potato chips .
  • Veg Fried rice/Biriyani - Again with less oil/ghee & with more vegetables, children like this as well .
  • Veg Noodles - Started using the plain noodles (Koka brand available in Singapore is without MSG & without Masala as well) with more Veg and desired spices-(Dont tell Pranhav & Magathi , its 80 %-Veg & 20% noodles He he he :D ).Pranhav & Magathi like it. Though they complain that they liked and asked for the plain Maggi noodles only, Manage to eat this with Tomato sauce.
  • Beetroot Rice/Carrot rice - Matter of mixing Onion, (Tomato optional based on the texture preferred ) , Beetroot/Carrot and rice with salt -Colourful rice which children dont neglect .
Other than this, There are hundreds of Mixed rice options with different healthy ingredients like, Mushroom rice, Coriander/Mint leaves rice, Corn rice etc which can be found with our great friend Google :)

3) Dosa is a great invention and very flexible item which can be moulded according to children's likes. I have used/am using Dosa as a teaching tool as well :). Infact this idea started from Pranhav only as he wanted Triangle Dosa instead of circle when he was learning shapes . Few Idli and Dosa options which kids will love to eat :). Need not worry about the intake, goes in more than the required quantity :)
  • Shapes Dosa - Triangle, circle, square, Heart & What not with just changing the shape of the dosa instead of circle .
  • Cone Dosa - Kids love this crispy Dosa . After making normal crispy Dosa, Cut along half the diameter and then roll from one side till the end .
  • Alphabets Dosa (During Nursery )- You can ask them for the alphabet option they want and can make and give.Especially, when there are two kids, they will want different alphabets and in competition, dosas will flow in :)
  • Name Dosa (During K1 & K2) - Pranhav and Magathi love to get their Name in the plate .. They collect the alphabets of their names and eat with a big smile . Though I am a happy mom at that time, have wished that I could have kept a real long name for them :)).When they were learning Maths, Pranhav has asked for + dosa and - dosa as well :)
  • Masala Dosa - Not only kids , we too love it .
  • Smiley idli - Make normal idlies and just mark 2 dots and one smile on top with Strawberry / Mango dessert topping before cooking. When the idlies are cooked, they come out with a beautiful smile , of course kids will love to eat . I do this for their tiffin box. If they are immediately eating at home, after cooking the idlies, can ask them to make smiley themselves and eat.

4) Soups and milkshakes are great ways to include vegetables and fruits which kids dont like .Till now , was trying to somehow include Avacados in their meal after hearing its health benefits .They didn't like the taste at all . Hari told that he had avacado milkshake in office and it was wonderful...(Idea !!!) . Tried the Avacado milkshake and was happy with the result :)
Now, had Russian salad in one of the restaurants recently , it was awesome .. Trying to make a modified version soon at home :)

And...If none of these options work out on your child , the last best option to feed a healthy food would be to make them sit in front of the computer (with games they like) and feed them the food... They wont even know even if a fly goes inside their mouth ...and will keep swallowing  :))) (Trick that I discovered today :) )

Though, all these options might not be useful for all the kids, Parents can take the 80-20 idea and can try it !

Magathi's Princess and castle Bday cake

After Pranhav's bday, Magathi was eagerly waiting for her 5th Bday . Everyday, she will ask , "How many more days to go for my Bday " ? One day , I was generally asking her what colour bday cake she wanted & she said pink . Then she came up with few more requirements saying that she wanted a princess cake . While I was generally browsig about cake decoration youtube, I came across the video for making Princess(or barbie doll cake) cake which looked quite simple . Then I said I'll make her a princess cake. One day, just like that borrowed a library book on baking cakes and saw that baking a castle cake was quite simple as well and looked awesome . When Pranhav saw that, he said he wanted a castle cake only ,. As usual , there was a fight between castle cake & princess cake. I told them I will make a castle & princess on top of it . Then finally , baked the cake below.

For the pillars, used the small & big ice-cream cones. (The pillars got soaked in the cream and fell down ... Sad story :( Otherwise cake would have been even more better) Pranhav said "Amma, You are the super intelligent Mom" and Magathi agreed "Yes Amma" .Somehow made both of them happy . Now Pranhav has come up with his new order . He wants a race car cake for his next bday ... Friends are saying "Better to start a Bakery " :) Hari said "Magathi's 5th Bday cake is a milestone in your cake baking " .

India Trip - Dec 2011

Last Dec , went to India for 3 weeks . As usual , mosquito bites, travel, tiredness everything was there. But this time, was able to spend more time with Family & even Pranhav & Magathi had a feel of that happiness . This is their trip after 2 years and both of them are grown up now  and are able to remember & understand things happening around , compared to the previous trip.

For Pranhav , few interesting things were there in the trip which he is going to remember .
First thing he enjoyed  is the Auto rides. He preferred autos than car/taxi for travel . The open autos & carefree driving of auto drivers attracted him .For the first few days, his questions were :
1) How come dogs & cows are standing in the road? Buses will not hit them? No rules for them ?
2) Why auto drivers are going in the opposite direction in a one-way road ? No fine ? No rules ?

He also enjoyed the travel in Shadhabdhi , compared to all other trains , because of the food he was getting non-stop in the 4-5 hours :) .Orange drink, Then Sandwiches & samosa, then Dinner, then ice-cream - He couldn't say no for anything . But next day he realized his mistake :))

One more enjoyment for Pranhav was the curd in Paramakudi Patti's house. He really could make out the difference between the curd made in tetra pack preserved milk here and the fresh cow's milk there .Anytime, anybody asked what food he likes & what he want, he will answer "CURD RICE" ... He was telling , "Amma ! Can you pack some 12-13 packets of milk from Paramakudi & make curd in Singapore with that milk ? ". He loved the curd rice to such an extent that once he refused to go to hotel for dinner & wanted patti's curd rice only .

Thanks to the mosquito bat, Pranhav's favourite time pass during the trip was that mosquito bat and he has acquired the skills of aiming correctly & hitting . Every evening, he will put his protection layer of Odomos and will take his weapon (mosquito bat ) and will start killing each & every mosquito approaching him . At night, he will sleep with the pride of a soldier who has won the war & killed his enemies :). Unfortunately , he will still have mosquito bites next day morning :) .Grandparents (both in chennai & PMK) remember Pranhav whenever they see the mosquitos & mosquito bat .

Magathi enjoyed the small dogs & animals she could see & was telling, cute dog for any dog she comes across . She also enjoyed the bike rides with grandfather in PMK & shopping (of course! Girl la!) . She also loved the company of relatives & friends around ,which she dont have in Singapore . (Me too !) . She has become really talkative after this trip .

Apart from this , few other things which both Pranhav & Magathi enjoyed are the night travel in trains , crackers & big lamps for karthigai , variety of food , trip to Srirangapatnam & the toys they got to see there etc . They also stayed alone (without Parents) for the first time, without any issues  .Magathi stayed in Siva -Saraswathi's house (family friend) for a night & Dhanya's house (my sister) for a night .Pranhav stayed in Dhanya's house for a night & also in Bangalore Ashram (AOL) for 3 nights .

Pranhav had insisted on taking snaps of few things (which we cannot see in Singapore)  like the autos, lorries, people standing in footboard, rail poochi (not sure on the english name of that insect) etc to show it to our helper. Later he was explaining the photos to our helper . His literal translation to rail poochi was train insect .... :))

Overall , they liked India very much except for the mosquitoes :))

Birthday Cakes

It started 2 years back, making cakes at home for Pranhav, Magathi & Hari's Birthdays .Not sure whether they really liked it, but I surely feel very happy about it that I can bake for them .Pranhav & Magathi enjoy the process of baking the cake & provide ideas for decorations now .They keep sitting in front of the Oven and watch the cake with so much tension .They also like licking and swallowing the remaining cream & melted chocolates during the process :)

After an experience of baking around 5-6 cakes in last 2 years, my cakes have improved to a noticeable level. This is the chocolate banana 2 layer cake I had baked for Pranhav's 8th B'day this year .

With much demand, got my first order from my neighbour & baked a vanilla mango cake for their son's second bday as well (for free only :) ).

Magathi has placed an order for princess cake for her 5th B'day ... Let's see :) .

Murukku

In every house murukku is made for festivals , but every version will be different .
It is something like fingerprint, In no two houses, murukku's taste, texture , shape will be the same :)
After my marriage, I was also trying different versions (reason being no flour mill to grind the flour for murukku), but was not satisfied until I tried my mom's recipe below. Though I finally had to find one flour mill in Singapore, this version turns out really well and gets the appreciation of everybody who tastes it. I once got a comment saying that it is even better than sri krishna version ... (I swearrrrrrrrrrrr :)  ) .
This recipe works out well only for mullu Thenkuzhal (a type where the star plate is used for making murukku).

Ingredients :

Raw rice - 4 cups
Moong Dhal - 1 cup
salt - As required
aesafoetida - 1/2 tea spoon
Butter - 4 tbsp
Oil - For frying

Recipe :

Fry the moong dhal slightly . Mix it with the 4 cups raw rice & prepare the flour (grinding in the mill yields expected results :) ) .I normally go to the mill once a year only & store the grinded flour in freezer. Will use it whenever required.

Mix the flour, salt, aesafoetida & warm melted butter . Make it into a dough by adding water . Put the dough in the murukku maker with star plate in it & prepare the murukkus . Heat the oil & fry them .

Normally the murukkus are removed when the bubbles and sound reduce/stop .

Enjoy the taste & Appreciation :))

My First parenting Article

After Magathi was born , When I was exploring the ways to manage both kids and their sibling rivalry , I got lot of info from the super nanny serial . I wanted to share it with all parents like me and then wrote and sent this article below to the Tamil Magazine MangayarMalar .My first article got published too :) .Wanted to post the same as my first parenting blog also now.

For those who cannot read Tamil, this article gives some techniques which could be applied to improve the kid's behaviour & studies . I have used few techniques like giving them a star tree and making them colour till the tree top for each good behaviour or achievement, stickers for good behaviour, printed certificates or printed dollar notes etc . This has helped a lot and have always yielded good results .One of our friend Sasi also has written a blog about this which explains similar techniques .
http://motleypot.blogspot.com/2011/01/rewarding-system-for-kids.html

One key thing to remember is that the children get bored with any technique after some time . So atleast once in 2 months change the technique and try to reward them with things they like which will make it more fruitful .

About Magathi

Our 4.5 yrs old daughter Magathi daily goes to Prayer room and tells the 2 slogams (as below) which she knows, before going to school .

Sukhlaam baratharam vishnum
Sasivarnam sathur pujam
prasanna vadhanam thyaayeth
Sarva vignoba santhaye - 4 lines and

Saanthakaram bujagasayanam padmanaabam suresham
vishvaagaram gagana sathursham megavarnam subaangam
lakshmi kaantham kamalanayanam yogi gridhyaana gamyam
Vande vishnum bavabayagaram
Sarva logaika naatham - totally 8 lines .

But when she reaches the 8th line "Sarva" , she gets confused & starts again as "sarva vignoba santhaye .. Santhaakaram bujaga" (2nd slogam) ..
Whenever she reaches the 8th line, she by mistake starts again with the 4th line & continues on & on ... (bug ... infinite loop ... :) ) .
I didn't notice this first, Pranhav heard this never ending Prayer and started rolling on the floor laughing out loud .
Whenever she goes to Prayer room, He starts giggling and she (without knowing the reason) keeps smiling at him & tells the prayer .

Nowadays, when she reaches the 8th line , I intervene carefully (otherwise she will miss the school bus, telling her never ending slogam) , and put her prayers to end by telling "Sarva Logaikaaa Naaatham" & send her to school :)) .

If I call her from office & ask her "What are you doing? ", she will say "I am sit downing " ?!!!:-)

Good that I started this blog, i try to recollect the memories & enjoy myself :) .
More memories to follow :)
